Despite increasing sexual liberalization, virginity and its loss persist as contested and highly gendered concepts in many parts of Asia. According to theories in feminism and sexuality studies, virginity may be socially constructed as either a gift, a stigma, an act of worship, or a process. We synthesize findings from quantitative sources and original qualitative data from focus groups and interviews with Filipino women and men. Filipina women expressed disapproval of sex for unmarried women, but less for unmarried men, and placed less importance on male virginity. The evidence indicates the presence of a sexual double standard and supports the argument that women themselves may endorse cultural belief systems that restrict female sexuality.
Christine E. Kaestle, Carolyn T. Halpern, William C. Miller, Carol A. The authors examined the relation between age at first vaginal intercourse and a positive nucleic acid amplification test for sexually transmitted infection STI. A nationally representative sample of 9, respondents aged 18—26 years was tested for chlamydial infection, gonorrhea, and trichomoniasis in wave 3 — of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health. The authors used multiple logistic regression to assess the relation between age at first sexual intercourse and these STIs and to examine variation by current age, sex, race, and ethnicity.

Losing your virginity is a big deal. It's not uncommon to have all sorts of romantic and exciting fantasies of how your first time will play out. But for most people, the reality is that their first time having sex was less than perfect. It makes sense that with lack of experience, nerves, and some pretty skewed views of what sex actually looks like, that people's first times are usually not so great or not what they expected. Reddit users shared some of their awkward, funny, and downright embarrassing stories about losing their virginity. Of course, these examples of first times are just for fun, as we can't independently authenticate the stories. We spent almost the whole night trying to get it in. Every time he would insert himself a little more and he'd have to pull out because it hurt me so much.
Despite the literature's focus on hetero sexual initiation, we know little about the degree to which young people are satisfied by their first vaginal intercourse experience, let alone the factors that predict satisfaction. We analyzed data from a cross-sectional survey of non-Hispanic White and Black year old respondents from four university campuses. Respondents were asked to rate the degree to which their first vaginal intercourse was physiologically and psychologically satisfying. Both Black and White women were significantly less likely than Black and White men to experience considerable or extreme satisfaction at first vaginal intercourse, particularly physiological satisfaction. Among all four gender-race groups, being in a committed relationship with one's sexual partner greatly increased psychological satisfaction, particularly among women. Experiencing less guilt at first sexual intercourse was also strongly associated with psychological satisfaction for women. Developing sexual relationships with partners they care for and trust will foster satisfaction among young people at first vaginal intercourse. Our findings highlight strong gender asymmetry in affective sexual experience.
